Women of Labor
A group of women in labor rely on each other throughout the physical and emotional act of creation, in a symbolic communal birthing pool.
The panel draws inspiration from the Italian Renaissance production of tondo paintings to commemorate important life events, such as childbirth or marriage, assigning to the circular format the ideal setting for religious or mythological depictions.
A close friend who free-birthed in water was the muse for this piece and provided me with personal photographic material I used for reference alongside images I was able to find on social media shared by mothers to be.
The opalescent fabric hints at the process of giving birth in water and is a symbolic extension of the umbilical cord depicted running between some of the subjects. This vignette is intended to generate a sense of the installation “Sante & Miracoli”, currently in development.
