ARTIST STATEMENT

A group of women in labor rely on each other throughout the physical and emotional act of creation, in a symbolic communal birthing pool.

The panel draws inspiration from the Italian Renaissance production of tondo paintings to commemorate important life events, such as childbirth or marriage, assigning to the circular format the ideal setting for religious or mythological depictions.

A close friend who free-birthed in water was the muse for this piece.
